Press Release - December 30, 2009: TECNAM the World’s Largest Manufacturer of Light Sport Aircraft, Following the Friedrichshafen’s European Air Show in April 2009, where the TECNAM P2008 was launched, few people thought that a new aircraft combining an advanced carbon fibre fuselage with a metal wing and stabilator could be brought to market so quickly. However, TECNAM is today, pleased to be able to announce the shipment of its first P2008 LSA to Heart of Virginia Aviation Inc (HOVA) based in Richmond, Virginia, USA. TECNAM has long been known for building stylish, well-flying, all-metal Light-Sport Aircraft since 1948, but the decision to utilize both carbon fiber and metal on the P2008, allows for the optimization of aerodynamic qualities and reliability. Carbon fiber provides smooth surfaces, elegance, style, comfort and aerodynamic qualities for the fuselage while metal is used for the wing and stabilator for maximum strength and reliability. With this development Tecnam continues to lead the way in revolutionizing the Light Sport market worldwide. The wing is based on the well known NACA63A airfoil, and, through partial tapering, is brought close to the optimal lift distribution (elliptical). The single-slot flaps extend along much of the wing span. The Frise type aileron along with the taper design provides a high rate of roll. The all movable type (stabilator) horizontal tail, traditional on all TECNAM aircraft, allows excellent controllability and exemplary “hands off” longitudinal stability. The nose gear is free castering and consists of a tubular steel leg, connected to the lower engine mount attachments and is braced by a rubber shock absorber. All of the landing gear is faired to minimize drag. Ground steering is by differential braking. The P2008 has two large 55 liter fuel tanks (29 US gallons total) which are located in the wing box behind the main spar to preserve their integrity in the event of a crash landing and to minimize the potential for a fire. The modular design of the large instrument panel can accommodate almost any combination of digital glass, analog instrumentation and avionics. The expansive cockpit provides the extra space and comfort for people and baggage that confirms the P2008 as the ultimate choice for a Light Sport cross country tourer. The TECNAM P2008 is available now in both LSA and ULM categories, and will be available within the next twelve months in both PTF and RTC categories. The aircraft pictured here will be presented at the Sebring U.S. Sport Aviation Expo in Florida from the 20th to the 23rd of January 2010.
